RABDF Youngstock Farm Walk - September 2014

RABDF Youngstock Walk September 2014

The latest of a series of RABDF-organised Youngstock Farm Walks was hosted by the Rogers family at Longmoor Farm, near Gillingham, Dorset. The family milk 240 pedigree Holsteins and rear 180 youngstock.

The sun was shining brightly as 130 farmers gathered to hear about various aspects of youngstock management. Matt Yarnall from Boehringer was his usual enthusiastic self and together with the help of Helen Rogers, a farm vet at Friars Moor Veterinary Clinic at Sturminster Newton and wife of farmer and host Stuart, had arranged for a batch of calves to be disbudded on farm that morning. Half the batch was treated with Metacam as well as receiving local anaesthetic and the other half were just disbudded with local anaesthetic.

Matt gave the farmers a general overview of good practice around disbudding and highlighted the benefits of treating disbudded calves with Metacam. The audience was then given the job of guessing which calves had been treated and which hadn’t, with the majority guessing correctly.

All in all it was an excellent day, thanks to the RABDF for organising and thanks to the Rogers family for hosting what was considered to be a very enjoyable and informative day.
